K-12 SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Since 2002, Dancing Drum has specialized in providing percussion-based programs for schools. We believe that rhythm is fundamental and all students should have the opportunity to experience music-making with their peers.

Drumming is energetic and fun! It provides opportunities to build skills in listening, respecting, coordination, and connecting. Below, see our list of "11 Ways Schools Benefit from Drumming".

Dancing Drum's K-12 School Programs include:

Interactive Performances

Workshop-to-Performance
Artist-in-Residency

Community Drum Ensemble

Drum Circles & Workshops

Professional Development

Each of these programs can choose a focus on Dancing Drum's standards-based curriculum content, described
in the "Curriculum Programs" section of this site.

"I was amazed at how the students learned to work as a group, and were on the same beat, and stopped at the same time. Peer pressure seemed to work in a positive way. Many students didn't think they would be successful and were pleasantly surprised and proud of themselves when their drumming sounded really good!"
- Teacher, Santa Barbara, CA

12 Ways Schools Benefit from Drumming:

1) Drumming is INCLUSIVE. It is accessible and creates successful learning experiences for everyone - students of all ages and abilities, teachers, parents, and administrators.

2) Drumming teaches GOOD CHARACTER. Participants build skills in respecting others, behaving fairly, and contributing responsibly to the music of the group.

3) Drumming is STANDARDS-BASED. It fulfills state and national educational standards for Performing Arts, Music, and Physical Education.

4) Drumming is POWERFUL. It is engaging and grounds us in the present moment. You may be surprised to see the most timid students, and the most challenging students, exceeding all expectations during drumming sessions.

5) Drumming is PHYSICAL. It involves self-control, coordination of the body and mind, and it's good exercise.

6) Drumming is COMMUNICATION. Rhythm is a universal language involving listening, responding, memorization, and working together to create music.

7) Drumming is THERAPEUTIC. It is an expressive outlet that helps to release emotions and stress in a positive way.

8) Drumming is MULTI-CULTURAL. Learning about the different drums and drumming traditions of the world promotes appreciation for diversity, geographical awareness, and curiosity about the world.

9) Drumming is COMMUNITY-BUILDING. It creates a feeling of support, respect, and connection amongst peers and develops teamwork skills.

10) Drumming is GOOD MUSIC. When students drum together successfully, the music sounds great!

11) Drumming is INSPIRING. It can spark interest in learning more about music, inspiring students to become better musicians on whatever instrument they play.

12) Drumming is FUN! It excites and energizes the entire school community, creating a positive environment for everyone to enjoy.
